The story behind “Literally Novel”

With a deep commitment to education, crisis advocacy, and community support, I’ve spent over a decade honing my skills across various fields, including library science, instruction, and mental health advocacy. I hold master’s degrees in both English Literature and Library Science, which have provided me with a strong foundation in research, information literacy, and the ability to create engaging educational environments.
Currently, I serve as the Children and Youth Services Librarian at the Person County Public Library. In this role I have the opportunity to promote and encourage learning for a caring community.
Previously, I served as the Director of Crisis Services at the Durham Crisis Response Center, where I lead a dedicated team supporting individuals impacted by abuse, domestic violence, and human trafficking. My work in crisis management, training staff in trauma-informed care, and collaborating with community partners has further deepened my passion for helping others, particularly those navigating difficult circumstances.

Beyond crisis services, my experience extends into education, where I’ve taught English and Composition at the University of the People, Coastal Carolina University, the University of Maryland, and Salisbury University. I focus on digital literacy, research methodology, and literary analysis, helping students develop practical writing skills. My teaching style emphasizes creativity, fostering critical thinking and self-expression.
Along those lines, I served as Director of Vocational Services at Oaks Recovery, where I coordinated educational and vocational programs for individuals recovering from substance use disorders. I developed workshops and one-on-one coaching, helping clients rebuild their lives through personalized support. This role reinforced my belief in holistic, person-centered approaches to education and recovery.

Throughout my career, I’ve worked with diverse populations, from students and patrons with disabilities and learning differences, to individuals overcoming addiction, as well as individuals processing trauma. My approach is always centered on empathy, empowerment, and inclusivity. I’m a certified Peer Support Specialist in both North and South Carolina as well as a certified facilitator in the Game to Grow Therapeutic Model, which utilizes role-playing games to promote emotional regulation and communication.

Whether in the library, classroom, or crisis setting, my goal is to help individuals access the resources, skills, and support they need to succeed. I’m driven by a lifelong commitment of learning and advocating for others, and I’m excited to continue making an impact in the lives of those I serve.
